Runes are special because you can't immediately understand them. You know they are from vikings , yet without the help of the text nearby , it is just a drawing for you. In a way modern pictures of revolutions, wars, news, without context they are not very explicit. Was it in Mexico? Europe? When? Why are they protesting?
